DiGi 3G vs Maxis 3G

I was a long time Maxis customer until i went over to China for about 2 years for work. I recently got back early this year and was looking for a mobile service provider. I didn't give it much thought when my sister had a really nice mobile number and offered it to me. It was from DiGi. So I thought, niceee. I get a nice number which I didn't had to pay for it. So I took it up and ended up a first time DiGi customer.

At the start it was just annoying that on DiGi, whenever i had to make a call, i have to make it twice as I had no explanation why this is so. So I thought that DiGi service and coverage is just sucky.  But how sucky can it get since it was the No.2 mobile service provider in Malaysia.

I am a heavy internet user and the appeal of a unlimited mobile internet plan for just RM68 from DiGi was pretty good. Maxis didn't offer an unlimited plan and I've heard horror stories from my friends that uses Maxis that their internet usage went thru the roof. It was crazy and that sorta settled my decision to go with DiGi and their unlimited plan for just RM68.

I have been using DiGi for about 8 months now, and guess what. I have been bitching about the usage speed on DiGi ever since. My poor gf had to endure my bitching about the speed on this stupid DiGi 3G Network. I had not idea what was the speed, but it was DEFINITELY not up to speed to my expectations.

I am using an iPhone4 on DiGi and my buddy recently got and iPhone4 on Maxis.  I downloaded the speed test app from iTunes to both my phone and my buddy's phone. Wanted to try out the actual speed for both the mobile internet providers.

Just look at the comparison. The phones were side by side running the same test simultaneously. My DiGi even had 3 bars of 3G service where Maxis had about 2 bars of 3G service.  Take a look at the ping speed. DiGi 288ms vs Maxis 81ms.  The ping speed for Maxis is almost 4 times.  Look at the download speed. DiGi 0.31mbps vs Maxis 4.38mbps.  Thats about 15 times faster. Upload speed is basically negligible as I seldom send uploads on my phone unless its for email with attachments.

The only thing that was holding me back was the unlimited data plan from DiGi. Well, for users looking to switch providers. DiGi no longer offers the unlimited data plan.  They have a new data plan which is almost the same as Maxis Data Plan.

Lets say we take the 3Gb limit. Its only RM28 bucks more expensive compared to DiGi. IMHO,  This is enough to persuade me to switch to Maxis which I feel is a much more reliable provider in Malaysia.

Me<----I pissed off DiGi customer.

You're actually the first person I've come across who has had speed issues with DiGi. Everyone I know complains about DiGi's coverage but praise the speed :S
